ChopSaver was originally created for musicians – hence the funny name. When I developed the formula, I had a specific set of symptoms I was trying to relieve – mainly the chapping and lip irritation that can occur when one plays a wind or brass instrument like a flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone, just to name a few.

Extreme weather conditions such as hot and dry or windy and cold climates are another obvious cause of dry, chapped lips. But there is another group of consumers that are affected by dry lips for less obvious reasons. I am referring to medical conditions and treatments that can cause dry mouth (a condition known as xerostomia) and the dry lips that come with it.

Dry mouth and the accompanying dry, chapped lips are a common side effect of many other prescription and nonprescription drugs, including those used to treat depression, anxiety, pain, allergies and colds, obesity, epilepsy, hypertension , diarrhea, nausea, psychotic disorders, urinary incontinence, asthma and Parkinson’s disease . Dry mouth can also be a side effect of muscle relaxants and sedatives.

Here is just a partial list of the types of drugs that can cause dry mouth and lips:

  • antihypertensives
  • antidepressants
  • analgesics
  • tranquilizers
  • diuretics
  • antihistamines
  • statins
  • chemotherapies
  • anti-retrovirals (HIV/AIDS meds)
  • antibiotics
  • immunosuppressants

Often, the medical condition itself can bring on mouth and lip discomfort including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Anemia
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Diabetes
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hypertension
  • Mumps
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Sjögren’s Syndrome
  • Stroke

Medical treatments such as radiation to the head and neck can damage the salivary glands. Chemotherapy treatments can reduce the amount of saliva produced resulting in dry mouth and lips.
