The sunscreens in ChopSaver SPF 15 are avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and octocrylene and provide Broad Spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection. These are FDA-approved ingredients that have been generally approved as safe and effective for decades because protecting your lips from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays is critical. 

Putting physical sun blockers like zinc and titanium in a lip balm is challenging because the feeling is often less smooth, but it is something we are working on. ChopSaver is known for its smoothness, and we don’t want to compromise in that regard.

Some worry about chemical sunscreens, but there’s no evidence they are carcinogenic in humans when used as directed. In our opinion, some information is misleading, but there is no disagreement that the sun’s rays are proven to cause skin cancer and premature aging. Some of the concerns stem from in vitro (test tube) or animal studies where very high concentrations of these ingredients caused issues. But these do not reflect real-world use on human skin. Again, the biggest cancer risk isn’t what’s in the tube—it’s what comes from the sun.
